SENA BIANNUAL MEETING (HYBRID MEETING)

Professor Werring trained in medicine at Guy's Hospital Medical School and undertook neurology and medical training in London including King's College Hospital, the Maudsley Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, and The National Hospital, Queen Square.

He was appointed consultant neurologist at The National Hospital, Queen Square, University College Hospital (UCH) and Watford General Hospital in 2005. In 2015 David was appointed as Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Stroke Research Centre, UCL Queen Square Institue of Neurology.

Professor Werring contributes to delivering hyperacute and acute stroke care, and runs a specialist clinical service and research program in intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel disease (particularly cerebral amyloid angiopathy), as well as superficial siderosis of the central nervous system. He is Head of the Research Department of Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at the Institute of Neurology, Chair of the Association of British neurologists Stroke Advisory Group, Stroke Specialty Lead for the NIHR North Thames Clinical Research Network, Secretary of the British Association of Stroke Physicians, Expert Advisor to the NICE centre for guidelines, and on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Neurology, European Stroke Journal, and Practical Neurology. David is also Chair for the UK Stroke Forum, the largest multidisciplinary event for stroke care professionals in the UK.

Professor Werring has published over 300 papers and contributed to several books. He is an editor of the forthcoming Queen Square textbook of Neurology.

Jennifer is a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. She did her undergraduate and core medical training in Cork, Ireland before completing her PhD at the Institute of Neurology which was focused on synaptic transmission in Lambert-Eaton syndrome and myasthenia gravis. She completed her neurology training the Royal Free Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and was appointed as a consultant in 2018.

Jennifer works at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square.

She sees patients in the neurocritical care unit and has specialist clinics for myasthenia gravis and inherited and acquired neuromuscular disease.

Professor Michael Lunn is Professor of Clinical Neurology, Consultant Neurologist and Clinical Lead in Neuroimmunology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and at University College London. Following schooling in Kent, his undergraduate training was at Emmanuel College Cambridge, where he obtained a First Class degree in Natural Sciences. His clinical training was at the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in London.

After completing rotational medical training posts at The Royal Brompton Hospital, The Hammersmith Hospital and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, he won a Patrick Berthoud Charitable Trust PhD Scholarship under the mentorship of Professor Richard Hughes. His PhD was performed at Guy's Hospital, London and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. His thesis on the role of antibodies in inflammatory neuropathy has continued to shape his subsequent academic research and clinical practice interests.

His clinical practice covers all aspects of neurology, but concentrates on inflammatory peripheral nerve diseases. His specialist practice therefore covers all of peripheral neuropathy especially the many inflammatory conditions of nerve such as CIDP, GBS, multifocal motor neuropathy, paraproteinaemic neuropathies, POEMS syndrome, vasculitis, amyloid, and rare haematological diseases linked to nerve disease. It also covers mimics of these diseases which may present in similar ways. Other conditions such as nerve root lesions, brachial and lumbosacral plexopathy, metabolic, toxic and infectious neuropathies, genetic diseases of nerves as well as idiopathic axonal neuropathies are all considered. His general neurology practice covers almost all other neurological disease, but patients may well be referred on to colleagues with specific clinical interest if final diagnosis (for example access to rare genetic testing in the research environment) or complex therapeutics are required.

His research interests include the pathogenesis and treatment of inflammatory neuropathies including GBS, CIDP, paraproteinaemic neuropathies and POEMS syndrome. As well as the causation of these diseases, he is also concerned with the measurement of outcomes in trials and day to day practice.

Over the last 15 years he has developed an increasing interest in the neuropathies associated with haematological disorders and with Dr Shirley D'Sa set up the first UK based POEMS service. A parallel clinic concentrates on the neurology associated with other paraproteinaemic disorders.

He is joint Coordinating Editor of Cochrane Neuromuscular, based at the National Hospital for Neurology, and author of more than 150 publications and systematic reviews in his areas of interest.

Dr Patricia McNamara is a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.

Together with Drs Mike Zandi and Hadi Manji, she leads the UCLH clinic for neurology patients with 'long Covid' with funding from the National Brain Appeal.

Dr Michael Zandi is consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square and UCLH, London. He is honorary associate professor in the University College London Queen Square Institute of Neurology Department of Neuromuscular Diseases.

He works on central and peripheral nervous system neuroimmunological diseases, particularly autoimmune encephalitis (eg. associated with NMDAR, LGI1 or related autoantibodies, COVID-19 neurology), with a broader research interest in all central and peripheral neuroimmunology, CNS vasculitis and amyloid related angiopathy, neurological involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus and related rheumatological conditions. He provides neurology input to the UCLH systemic lupus erythematosus clinic with Professor David Isenberg.

He co-chairs a weekly Friday afternoon encephalitis clinical meeting (since April 2020 this is combined with the UCL Queen Square National Hospital COVID-19 neurology and encephalitis meeting) which takes referrals nationally. With Drs Hadi Manji and Patricia McNamara he is running a COVID-19 neurology service with rapid access clinic and follow up. He runs two specialist neuroimmunology and encephalitis clinics a week, and one general neurology clinic a week, at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Dr Sylvester is a consultant neurologist based at NHNN.

He qualified from Oxford University and completed his specialist training in London. He has a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience from University College London (UCL) which focussed on advanced functional brain imaging.

Dr Sylvester runs a multi-disciplinary cognitive rehabilitation clinic for patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). He has particular expertise in managing the acute and long term effects of sports related concussion and runs a clinic for professional athletes with complex concussion at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health, UCL.

He is a member of the Association of British Neurologists TBI advisory group and a founder and executive member of the UCL Partners Centre for Neurorehabilitation. He is a member of both the English Football Association and Rugby Football Union expert concussion advisory panels.

Dr Brownlee is a consultant neurologist and clinical Lead for the multiple sclerosis service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and honorary associate professor at UCL Institute of Neurology.

He completed undergraduate and postgraduate training in Auckland, New Zealand before moving to London to undertake PhD studies. His thesis focused on the use of MRI to improve the diagnosis of MS, and the identification of prognostic markers on MRI to better understand long-term outcomes in people with MS.

Dr Brownlee has been a consultant at the National Hospital since 2016. His main focus is seeing patients with MS and related disorders. He has a special interest in paediatric-onset MS and works closely with the team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Dr Brownlee is part of the Pan-London Multiple Sclerosis Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) multidisciplinary team. Dr Brownlee was appointed as clinical lead for the MS Service in 2019, providing clinical leadership and strategic direction for the largest specialist MS service in the UK.

Sonia is an MRC Senior Clinical Fellow and a Professor of Neurology at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, London.

Sonia leads the Francis Crick Institute neurodegeneration laboratory where her research program aims to understand cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie Parkinson's disease. Her laboratory focuses on key processes of protein oligomerization and mitochondrial dysfunction, and adopts a cross-disciplinary approach harnessing biophysics, single cell imaging and induced pluripotent stem cell modelling to interrogate these key processes in human cells and tissue.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gandhi was involved with the epidemiological investigations and testing efforts at the Francis Crick Institute.

Dr Zhaleh Khaleeli is a Consultant Neurologist. She works at the National Hospital for Neurology, UCLH where she specialises in MS and Neuro-ophthalmology, and at Watford General Hospital where she sees general and acute neurology. She completed her PhD at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, in 2008, studying the role of conventional and newer MRI techniques in monitoring and predicting the course of Primary Progressive MS. She has a keen interest in teaching and training and is the RCP Tutor and IMT Lead for UCLH.
